Exactly one week ago, another music event took place on Majorca: this time organised by the unbeatable „Mallorca Roots festival“ crew. Their slogan: “World Music Under the Stars“.
Let’s see: After the gates to Son Fusteret in Palma opened at 7pm last Tuesday, July 14th, the Majorcan local band Rumba Katxai entertained the ever-growing audience with rumba mixed rhythms with a multicultural touch added by the diverse members of the group.
The legendary Skatalites took the stage in excellent form and delivered an impeccable show playing songs like “Freedom Sound” and Doreen Shaffner singing “Sugar, Sugar” and “Adorable You”. The Majorcan date, however, did not only mark the beginning of their European summer tour but the birthday of young Travis Antoine, the trumpeter of the Skatalites. It was this detail that allowed us to witness the actual cohesion of the Jamaican band, both on and backstage. Once more, Happy Birthday Travis!!
After that gig which was difficult to top, the No. 1 band in Latin America and winner of 21 Latin Grammy in addition to 3 Grammys, Calle 13 led by the Puerto Rican stepbrothers René “Residente” Perez Joglar and Eduardo Jose “Visitante” Cabra Martinez and supported by Residente’s sister Illeana “PG13” Cabra Joglar took the stage to present their best-known songs „Atrévete-te-te“ or „El Aguante“ to a mass of approximately 3000 people. Not lacking was the song “Multi Viral“ that Resident described as being “a creation with Julian Assange” and during which the recorded voice of the founder of Wikileaks recited:
“We live in the world that their propaganda made
But where they think they’re strong they’re weak
Their lies tell us the truth we will use against them
Their secrecy shows us where we will strike
Their weapons reveal their fear for all to see
From Cairo to Quito, a new world is forming
The power of people armed with truth.“
One thing is sure: The crew of the Mallorca Roots festival were right when choosing their motto: precisely, it was an unforgettable event of “world music under the stars”.
